Transition through the trimesters
Not every trimester is the same, you and your baby are growing, developing and changing every day. Therefore, the way you sleep need to change with each trimester to accommodate your growing bump.
First trimester
In your first trimester you may find yourself feeling slightly warmer and more fatigued than you usually are, this is due to the different hormone levels in your body changing. While your body clock is drastically changing and you may be going to bed much earlier than normal to combat your tiredness, you can still generally sleep in most positions that are comfortable for you. We recommend that you always consult your doctor first to confirm what is safe for you and your baby.
Second trimester
As you enter into your second trimester you will start to feel slightly better as (hopefully) your morning sickness subsides and your other first trimester symptoms lessen. When you enter this stage in your pregnancy your bump will be slightly larger than at the start but still not largely noticeable. If your bump is still relatively small you may still be able to and find it comfortable enough to sleep on your stomach. However, it is generally recommended by health practitioners that from around 16 weeks you should start to sleep on your side rather as it is the safest position as it increases blood flow to your baby.
As your bump grows you may start to find that sleeping becomes increasingly more uncomfortable. If this is the case for you, we recommend that you consider investing in a pregnancy pillow as they wrap around your body providing extra support and comfort while sleeping and resting.
Third trimester
You are now more than halfway there and nearing the end of your pregnancy which means you will now have a much larger baby bump which can make sleeping very uncomfortable. At this stage you should be exclusively sleeping on your side, and preferably with a pregnancy pillow tucked between your legs and underneath your stomach to provide additional support.
