How To Use Essential Oils To Sleep Better

Struggling to fall asleep each night can be incredibly frustrating and can impact your health if the sleepless nights persist. While there are prescription medications you can take to help you fall asleep easier, not everyone wants to jump straight to this option. There are other alternatives that you can try before you go to your doctor for assistance, such as essential oils and aromatherapy.

Essential Oils That Are Known To Promote Sleep

Lavender oil

Lavender oil is a soothing scent that has been shown to treat anxiety, insomnia, restlessness and improve depression.

Try sprinkling a few drops onto your pillow or diluting it in a spray bottle and spraying your bedroom before bedtime. Alternatively, if you have an aromatherapy diffuser you can add a few drops to the water in the diffuser and run it through the night.

Vanilla oil

Vanilla oil is a warm, inviting scent that has be known to help relieve tension and calm the mind. Vanilla oil can aid in reducing hyperactivity and restlessness, and quiet the nervous system which can assist you with staying asleep for longer. Vanilla oil has also been shown to help you breathe easier which promotes good respiratory health.

Try adding a few drops onto your pillow or into your diffuser before going to bed for the best possible results.

Rose geranium oil

Rose geranium oil is widely known to be used to help treat patients and assist them with experiencing a calm, deep sleep. Rose geranium oil is a lovely herbaceous floral scent that is known to help balance hormones, relieve stress and reduce inflammation and irritation, as well as improve your overall circulation.

As with the lavender and vanilla oil, Try adding a few drops onto your pillow or into your diffuser before going to bed for the best possible results.

How To Use Essential Oils

1 Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil to a warm bath, about an hour to 90 minutes before bedtime.

2 Use an air diffuser to help disperse the oil in the air in your bedroom either before you go to bed or throughout the night while you sleep.

3 Make a mist in a spray bottle by combining 4-5 drops of your chosen essential oil and half a cup of water. Then spray this mixture onto your linen and around your bedroom about an hour to 90 minutes before bedtime.

4 Combine with a carrier oil and use it in light self-massage.

VERY IMPORTANT:

Essential oils are very concentrated. Never ingest the oils or put it onto your skin directly without diluting it with a carrier oil (e.g., sweet almond oil, grape seed oil, etc.). Although it will not cause a reaction in every case, it does have the potential to cause skin irritations and other unwanted reactions. Pregnant women should also consult with their healthcare provider before using essential oils.
