How Often You Should Be Washing Your Bedding

  • 2 min read

How Often Is Considered Often Enough When It Comes To Washing Your Linen

There is no better feeling than getting into bed that is made with freshly washed sheets. How often you should wash your bedding is a hot topic that is often heavily debated. Some people say that you should wash your bedding every week, while others suggest every two, three or even four weeks.

According to a 2015 Women’s Health poll, the vast majority of people wash their bedding fairly often, every two to three weeks but not necessarily that often that they change their sheets every few days to week. However, the scary thing that most people don’t realise is just how dirty a bed can get.

Not only do dust mites conceal themselves beneath the sheets and within our mattresses, but our bodies shed millions of skin cells throughout the night which end up in our bed sheets, bedding and mattress. This in combination with the oils and sweat our bodies secrete throughout the night is reason enough to want to change your bedding more often.

Your schedule and daily activities will also play a large role in determining how can you wash your bedding.

Top 5 Things To Ask Yourself To Determine How Often To Change Your Sheets

  1. How many people are in your bed at night?
  2. Do your pets sleep in bed with you?
  3. What attire do you wear to bed?
  4. Do you sweat a lot?
  5. Do you eat/drink in bed?

When you think about it technically, you sleep on your bedding for at least 8 hours every single day, that is almost just as long as you stay in your clothes throughout the day – so why would you not want to change your bedding often? We recommend that you wash your bedding at least every week for optimal cleanliness, but if that is not possible, then every 10 to 14 days.

Tips To Help Keep Your Bedding Fresher For Longer

Keep the pillows on your bed nice and fluffy and fresh by airing them every single day. You can do this by plumping them up when you make your bed in the morning or before going to bed at night. This will air out the dust and dirt, as well as assist with retaining the shape for longer.

Both mattresses and pillows should preferably be encased in a pillow protector and mattress protector. This protective case helps keep allergens at bay and prevents body and hair oil from seeping into your pillow and mattress. However, even if your pillow has a pillow protector, you should still wash it at least twice a year, should the care label allow it.
